Higurashi no naku koro ni is a popular detective novel doujin game that boasts that players have only a 1% chance of solving the mystery. The original console game announcement was covered here at the same time last year. An update on the status of the console port of the was announced at the recent AlcheMatsuri 2006 (a promo-event for Alchemist). The game is now called Higurashi no naku koro ni Matsuri. New features include the ability for the player to make choices in the game that can affect the ending. A new artist called Rato will also redraw all the character art. The game is planned for release in 2006. Exact details on the consoles that the game will be released on are still unannounced.
Square Enix has also organised a novel writing competition for Higurashi with a total prize money of 1,000,000 yen. Winners will have their story published in a book in october and have a chance of having their story produced into a drama CD.
