Sega's upcoming 2 SPICY looks like it will be a hell of a light gun shooter. With the tagline "Who is the strongest?", an edgy yellow-on-black grunge/graffiti artstyle, and a new versus gameplay mechanic, it is currently the top game on my "must play as soon as it comes out" list. Too bad no one outside japan gives a damn about it -- presumably because it doesn't have the words "house" and "dead" in the title.
It seems that you control your chosen character using two pedals for moving left and right, and can also bust out combos and take cover behind obstacles. I am not clear exactly how the versus fights work out in practice -- or if they are any fun -- because I somehow managed to miss the game's location test back in mid-october, and no journalists/bloggers/dudes with concealed cameras bothered to show up and make videos. For high-res shots of the cabinet and higher-res versions of the screenshots on the game's official page check the Sega Autumn 2006 Private Show report on
Game Watch. Also, check a rough drawing of the cabinet and a pic of the character and control method posters, courtesy of am-net.
There is one thing that really intrigues me about this game -- perhaps even more so than its cool concept. If you check Sega's official 2 SPICY page again you'll notice (right at the bottom of the page) that the hardware is listed as "Lindbergh Red". Now if you look at other official Sega pages for Lindbergh titles, such as the ones for The House of the Dead 4 or the upcoming Initial D Arcade Stage 4, you'll see that the hardware is always listed as simply "Lindbergh". So what's this Lindbergh Red system then? A red-painted Lindbergh? (It's normally yellow-grey.) The game will be out sometime next year. We'll just have to wait and see.
