News: Lindbergh unveiled

August 31, 2005, 08:18 AM

by chazumaru, via Sega AM - [permalink]

lind.jpgWe know everything about the Lindbergh through some evil Famitsu scans, with some of the games referenced in a post below. As Sega told this summer, their new arcade system is not based on any of the next-gen consoles. It's more in the same vein as Taito's Type-X board - it's a PC-based arcade board with a 3GHz Pentium 4 processor, a NVidia GPU, 1024MB of memory, games on protected DVD-ROMs, USB controllers and a big effort put on its LAN capacities. Whereas rumors presented the Lindbergh as a successor to the Chihiro (which had an XBox-based architecture), Sega's new board is a quite "neutral" system - its NVidia environment perhaps giving the PS3 a slight potential edge for future ports. A new project by Yu Suzuki is also joining Afterburner, Power Smash 3, The House of the Dead 4 and Virtua Fighter 5 in the Lindbergh's line-up. The game, Psy-Phi (pronounced like 'Sci-Fi'), is described as a "versus action-shooting game" apparently using a tactile screen.

News: Trizeal on PS2

by Recap, via Sega - [permalink]

This was just revealed on Sega's page for the Tokyo Game Show 2005. With the name Shooting Love ~Trizeal~ [!], the last DC game and one of the best examples on how to ruin the classic shooting formula with an inconsistent audiovisual department, is in production at the moment for the Sony console, joining Chaos Field (already announced for the PS2) for the cause. Not a dying genre, it seems.

News: 'Sequels', you say?

August 31, 2005, 03:24 AM

by Recap, via Souta House - [permalink]

In its latest issue, Famitsu Magazine published a long list of forthcoming titles for the current generation consoles, specifically lots of sequels/remakes of well known classic games. Some of them had been already revealed at E3, some were just rumored, and others are quite surprising. This is the case of Gokumakaimura (or is it 'Kyokumakaimura'?) for the PSP, Capcom's sequel to Chohmakaimura [Super Ghouls'n Ghosts], which is confirmed to have 2D gameplay. Xenosaga is also coming back as a DS game, as is Bokujou Monogatari [Harvest Moon] and Street Fighter Zero 3 (subtitled 'Double Upper', meaning that we could find some new characters), both for the PSP. Also, more than one game based in the Sakura Taisen universe is currently being made for the PS2, as is Sega Rally 2005. There will be a new Crazy Taxi for the next generation systems, Power Smash 3 [Virtua Tennis 3] (ARC) and a new Afterburner (ARC). These two titles will supposedly be supported by the Lindbergh system and be presented at tomorrow's AM Show, along with the previously announced Virtua Fighter 5 and The House of the Dead 4.

03_l.jpg Albeit supported by a rather dubious character design, Illusion Blue is a nice doujin vertical shooter from Hysterical Bonfire, with a clever close combat system and various weapons taking inspiration from brawlers. There's even a useful tutorial for understand the robots' handling and different meters, as Illusion Blue uses up to four action buttons, which is quite a lot for a shooter. Vector has a streaming movie of the game, and you can download the latest version of the game here.

News: Boxing no Machi

August 31, 2005, 01:31 AM

by chazumaru, via BnM - [permalink]

boxing.jpg The website Boxing no Machi ("boxing town") is unsurprisingly focused on the noble art of boxing, which would be as revelant on IC as a link to a guy who can turn local subway tickets in X-Wings, if it weren't for its webmaster's ability to produce copious freeware in his favorite genre. Some of the weirder efforts include boxing "games" using your computer's clock or hardware performances to decide the outcome of a match. One can also find valuable software such as Card de Boxing (which sums up everything with its name), Kuroi Punching Ball! (a punching ball simulator with a combo counter), and the recent Jisha Boxing ("live action boxing") which is a more exhaustive boxing simulation but is only available as a demo on the website - the full version is 500 yen. All of these programs are avaiable on his software download page (right click disabled).

The Tanguy Ukulele Orchestra will also be part of the cultural event Game Hotel 2005 next september in Paris through a first-ever live performance, and took part in the soundtrack of a very stupid fan project I'll detail soon. To avoid hurting Boulette's bandwith and also to celebrate his sudden surge in celebrity, Tanguy's musical website Miniclash (regrouping his different solo and band projects) will be updated by tomorrow with most of his work.

In case you enjoy this flash yet would rather fall for the upcoming and damn cute Famicom-colored Gameboy Micro, a GBA adaptation titled Tsuukin Hitofude will be released next october 13th in Japan, exactly one month after the Micro. August 26, 2005, 02:44 AM

by chazumaru, via Falcom's Newsletter - [permalink]

xanadu.gif Today's Falcom Newsletter has a bunch of interesting information. First, it gives a link to a more exhaustive version of the Xanadu Next webpage, providing vital information such as what mindboggling goodies will be featured in the traditional "first press". This time, faithful buyers will be rewarded with an enclyclopedia of the Xanadu universe, an arranged soundtrack of various episodes in the series, and a port of the acclaimed PC Engine version of Densetsu no Xanadu I&II. Also available are new screenshots and information on the game's system (unsurprisingly it looks pretty close to your everyday hack'n'slash, yet with a distinct Xanadu touch).

A more surprising announcement is the presence of two Falcom IPs at the upcoming 43rd Amusement Machine Show, held next September 1st, 2nd and 3rd. The games presented will be arcade versions of dungeon crawler Sorcerian Legend and tactical marvel VM Japan (which had a port on PS2 earlier this year that turned out to be very disappointing, Iggy tells me).

Recap's Note: Falcom's arcade titles VM Japan ~Maboroshi Furan Senki~ and Sorcerian Legend are being produced and developed by Aruze, as they announced the past year after both companies' agreement.

News: Takayoshi Sato interview

August 25, 2005, 04:35 PM

by brandon, via Takayoshi Sato - [permalink]

SH2angela.jpgOf all of the interviews I've done in recent months, this is my personal favorite. Takayoshi Sato created all of the CG for Silent Hill 1 on his own, and is the principal person responsible for the story, art direction, and some of the gameplay in Silent Hill 2. Recently, his work has been a bit more entrenched, with his latest work being in Goldeneye: Rogue Agent, for EA. This is one of the most candid explanations of the japanese game industry inner-workings that I've seen, and is even quite honest about what it's like to work in a behemoth american company. Here's an excerpt.

"Not many people believe that I did it myself – and it wasn’t like I wanted to make it all from scratch! I just had to do it in order to get credit. Plus, you don’t want to be credited in your game as assistant artist if you did everything. So it wasn’t easy. I didn’t go home for three years, almost. I lived there. I slept under the desk, and that midnight time I talked about, after everyone went home, was a real chance for me to work, because I had access to all of the computers in the office. We had over 150 computers or something like that, and at the time we were using the Unix operating system. So after everyone’s gone home, I can operate all of these computers to render my stuff. Yeah…I couldn’t go home."

And if you check his personal site, you'll see his early work on goldeneye. At the top, you see the final model, but take a look at his earlier ideas. Now that's a character caught between worlds, who's fighting against his friends, as the protagonist is supposed to be, eh?

News: Squenix hopes to swallow Taito

August 22, 2005, 03:01 AM

by chazumaru, via S-E/Taito - [permalink]

puzbob3.pngNot exactly the most predictable move in the current craze of company mergers: Taito may be on its way to being absorbed by Square-Enix, which itself was already one of the stronger business alliances in the japanese industry (after Sega Sammy). Game Watch reveals that Squenix is buying out 247.900 Taito actions, which will make it the main shareholder with 67% of all shares. Taito and its current major shareholders agreed to the deal, and most of the transaction will be completed some time around september. The deal can be explained by Taito's game catalogue being complementary with Square-Enix's and also by Taito's presence in the japanese amusement machines business through some arcade centers, numerous popular games, and their recent Type-X board. It might be coincidental, but Taito has also been in charge of adapting and releasing some Falcom role-playing games on the PlayStation 2 (though Konami has been doing it in the US). Were they to continue that policy, Square-Enix would further strengthen its position as the major RPG publisher on consoles.

So you can have fun wondering what insane crossovers might come out of this merger, here is a list of various Taito intellectual properties: Space Invaders, Bubble Bobble, Puzzle Bobble, Elevator Action, Darius, Qix, Rastan Saga, Hat Trick Hero, Cadash, Layer Section, Violence Fight, Camel Try, Power Blade, Lightbringer, Estopolis (a.k.a. Lufia), Chase H.Q., Cleopatra Fortune, Runark, Metal Black, Don Doko Don, Kurikinton and Battle Gear among many others. Most of them can be found on the recent Taito Memories compilations for PS2 which we have mentioned numerous times on IC.

by brandon, via koji igarashi - [permalink]

I interviewed the goth man in the cowboy hat (director of all things Castlevania) for gamasutra - you can read it here. I kind of like it. Here's an excerpt!

2D gameplay is precise – it can come down to one pixel of accuracy for attacking, defending, jumping, any sort of platforming element. In the 3D gaming environment, appreciation of distance is much more subtle, and control has to be looser. In 2D, the distance between the player and the enemy is very important, and can be planned carefully. In 3D, distance isn't the important thing, but rather timing.

by brandon, via Square Enix - [permalink]

Watching the most recent trailer on the Heavy Metal Thunder site has informed me that the for the opening theme, Japanese schlock rock group Sex Machineguns will be playing with Michael Shenker, of Scorpions and MSG fame (he's inexplicably popular in Japan, and referenced in pop culture as easily as Jimmy Hendrix would be). Also featured, Marty Friedman from Megadeth and Hawaii.

According to Gamespot, the game is command-based robot fighting, called 'robo-ress' (a play on puroresu, short for 'pro wrestling'), and features a young lad named 'denki akahibara'. Akihabara is of course the big electronics district in Tokyo, also referred to as 'electric town'. Denki indicated electricity, so there's a dual pun there. The game seems high on cheeky humor, and will likely never come to the US, given how long it took to explain just those two elements.

The DS will its Bleach game too, of course, and will be subtitled 'Souten ni Kakeru Unmei', and, interestingly enough, it's Treasure's current project for Sega. This is not surprising either, with Treasure's recent rash of license-based games, but it is interesting to see how the game somewhat resembles the MD Yuu Yuu Hakusho ~Makyoutou Itsusen~. So this makes another planned 4-player 2D vs. fighting game (along with Jump Superstars), to be available next January. The official website opened today, along with Treasure's own announcement.

The games are Ben James' Katapila and Philippe-Andre Lorin's Invs. Curious how true those PlayStation-Nuon comparisons were, way back when the console was alive, if porting is this possible. Thanks to Nuon-Dome for the link.

gimmick.gif Psikyo/X-Nauts' popular gal's mahjong game has come to cellphones in japan, according to Game Watch. One wonders if the naighty bits are retained - at least the Jun Tsukasa artwork remains, as seen left. Thanks to Radish from the mmc for the link.

Extase_10.jpg Today the latest game in the Summon Night series was officially released, an action RPG with hi-res sprites and 3D backgrounds, nicely received by Japanese media. The official website has some promotional and gameplay Flash videos showing superlative animation sequences, too. An unusual mainstream game with 2D 128-bit graphics which will probably remain unknown for the Western public.

hng.jpg Ben Heckendorn is at it again - this time he's created a handheld Neo Geo MVS system. It's unweildy and clunky, but, well....sure is neat.

News: more and more PSP homebrew

August 03, 2005, 11:29 AM

by chazumaru, via various - [permalink]

ngpsp.jpgAs hinted in their summer issue, Edge will focus on the PSP's homebrew development scene next september and (apparently) more specifically on the emulation scene, such as the fantastic NeoGeo CD emulator that runs most games perfectly. Speaking of which, its french author (going by the moniker YoyoFr) teamed up with another french guy (thunderZ of the GP32 scene) to develop a new Super Famicom emulator for PSP. A first draft was released yesterday and the results are quite impressive for an early version. Not perfect yet, but a nice alternative to its famed opponent "uo_Snes9x for PSP". A bunch of future upgrading releases have already been announced, including wi-fi multiplayer.

Meanwhile, there's now a port of Nethack avaiable, and a coder appropriately nicknamed Snatcher released a nice unofficial upgrade to Osakana's fMSX for PSP, allowing a few more games to run such as the translated MSX version of Snatcher by Daniel Caetano. The Gameroom Blitz has a load of interesting tips to share on the subject.

News: Nippon Ichi interview/advertising in games

Dayjob alert: here's an interview I did with Jack Niida from Nippon Ichi, on Gamasutra. The man's unbridled optimism about the sustainability of SRPGs and potential market glut is really admirable, even if I'm somewhat skeptical myself.

also! I should mention that eric-jon did an excellent writeup of the advertising in games event, also for gama, and wound up being rather skeptical. Shocking.

News: New game from Yuki Enterprise

August 02, 2005, 08:30 AM

by brandon, via Yuki - [permalink]

Yuki Enterprise, developer of the Samurai Shodown V and V Special games, has a couple of interesting recruitment ads on their homepage, which indicates that the company is working on a new game with 2D characters and 3D backgrounds. As an interesting aside, Iggy notes that when Yuki hired employees for the SS games, they did so on the SS webpage, which seems to indicate that at the very least, this game is not in the Samurai Shodown series.
