One final word on Kojima. I guess I kind of bought into the whole cult of celebrity thing with my meeting with Kojima. I was nervous, and after the meeting, even though I hadn’t discussed anything with him AT ALL, I was so high I might was well have just… Actually, forget that. I should really have asked him what the thought of the show, or what about the direction MGS3 was taking? But I didn’t. I could even have switched to English at any point just by saying I was going to. Instead, I left him to play Metal Arms : Glitch in the System and for his kid to play Simpsons: Hit and Run. Man! That little guy was engrossed in it. He didn’t even look round once. I’m surprised his tiny hands could fit round the original X-Box controller.

Though I guess that’s all blasphemy, anyway. Sony made it seem like they owned him, as he stood there on stage. And I think the stage was one of the reasons why I feel I was right to leave him alone. It was probably one of the few points in the day where he would have the constant hassle of inane questions from people he doesn’t know. No matter how much I would like to be his equal, I’m not. Maybe one day I’ll meet him in a better situation and we can laugh about my textbook Japanese, with mutual respect. I hope so.

And now one final word on MGS3: Snake Eater. I think, and this is only speculation, that he’s going to shock everyone with it. Remember the Vice City comments in the E3 trailer?

I think Kojima took the time to not lie with that, and no one noticed. How would he manage to create a jungle in a video game with traditional linearity without it being little more than the Jungle level from Goldeneye – pretty but ultimately unsatisfying?

It’s going to be a freeform jungle. There will be a linear story – how could there not be? But the jungle will act as a ‘hub’ at least. Imagine it – working your way across a realistic jungle using all of your stealth to avoid the guards constantly patrolling. Getting to know it. Getting to know survival. Maybe even wearing a crocodile as a hat.
