Hard for me to believe that there's a dedicated dreamcast-petition domain, but there is. We all know how rarely these things work, but hey - we keep trying right? Sign the petition to bring Border Down to DC from the original Naomi port. The game is made by G.rev, and actually features former Raystorm and G-Darius staff from Taito. A game worthy of play on the DC (official page), so...may as well give it a shot, non?

Actually the Moonlight Destiny wrist pillow is a new addition, but the Ys V PC and MD/Ys V OSTs remain the same. Access maps: Asobitcity, Softmap.

Industry Jobs: Playmore
February 27, 2003 8:31 PM PST
Playmore / BS
Two things from Playmore; first off, the KOF 2002 has been added to the DC consumer page, and there you may see several shots (no box art yet though).
More importantly, Playmore is hiring again, and the positions are telling of various things. First they need a graphic designer for animation, games and pachinko slot machines. Animation? Haven't heard that from Playmore before. Next job up is programmers for game OS. Must have knowledge of Computer Science Engineering, various Linux kernels and device drivers. Intriguing? They're also looking for a hardware designer, which could indicate that they plan to either abandon plans to use the Atomiswave, or perhaps just want someone who can familiarise themselves with the architecture? The last job is for a pachinco slot machine producer. They're definitely moving into Aruze's territory.

News: Radium GP32 further info
February 26, 2003 7:57 PM PST
Karma Studios / BS
I got a mail today from a fellow by the name of Tom Bryant regarding Radium for GP32. It seems he checked with Karma Studios - here's what they said:
"While we have the GP32 version working, it is uncertain if we will release it for GP32. It seems like the market is too small for us to make any money on it and could possible harm our sales on the other versions. We haven't had much [contact] from our GP32 contacts (including CEO), so we're assuming the system is dead."
Kind regards,
Martin Wenting
(Managing Director - Karma Studios)
Looks like Gamepark is up to their old tricks. Let's see what we can do about it, eh? Take this poll (you can vote without registering), and in a short time I'll take it to Gamepark. Perhaps it will convince them, even if it's only the view of the west.

News: Playmore release list
February 26, 2003 7:45 PM PST
Playmore / BS
Playmore themselves have yet to post it, but the word is all over the net. New release list:
4.24.03 - Metal Slug 3 (PS2)
5.29.03 - Shin Gouketuji Ichizoku (NeoGeo)
May 2003 - King of Fighters 2001 (PS2)
July 2003 - Metal Slug Advance (GBA)
July 2003 - King of Fighter Advance (GBA)
July 2003 - Metal Slug 5 (NeoGeo)
July 2003 - King of Fighters 2002 (DC)
2003 - SNK vs. Capcom Advance (GBA)
2003 - SNK vs. Capcom (NeoGeo)
Particularly surprising is SNK vs. Capcom Advance - and it seems as though Playmore is reclaiming the KOF GBA franchise. No word on developers for any of these titles, nor any official confirmation of this news, but...exciting no? While we're on the rumor tip, SNK NeoGeo USA has unofficial plans to release metal Slug 3 for PS2 in the US. Looks like my Agetec assumption was correct!

News: Radium for GP32
February 25, 2003 3:42 PM PST
Karma Studios / BS
Thanks to an email tipoff from Zamuel, we learned of a new game in the works for GP32. Radium is an over-the-shoulder person shooter, currently planned for GBA (see shot). But at the bottom of the page, they do mention that they've plans to release a GP32 version, among others. Further, Karma Studios' Radium 3D engine is available for use in creation of new GP32 titles. It doesn't look as nice as some GBA emu out there, but it's interesting to see it come to GP32. Take a look at the demo movie while you're at it. The actual gameplay seems rather poorly designed, given the fact that your character necessarily obstructs your view of the enemy while you shoot them. Still cool to see though.

News: Konami new "logo"

February 25, 2003 3:32 PM PST

Konami / BS
In a press release today, Konami has decided to change their logo for their 30th birthday. So-called 'Konami red' is supposed to symbolize the company's creativity and innovation, and their expansion into becoming a holding company. I'm...not sure how they plan to indicate this through the least interesting, most half-assed logo I've ever seen. It's astounding that someone got paid to make this.
Though I'll admit that their other studios have used logos in a similar typeface before.

News: GP32 update
February 24, 2003 11:49 PM PST
Various / BS
Latest info - let's start with the most important. There will be a demo of Bloody Cross this saturday, March first! It will be limited in terms of character selection, but another version will be unveiled closer to actual product release. It should be RF compatible. That is, if GP32 Notebook hasn't steered me wrong (have they ever?).
A new breakout style game has come from French devr JyCet. It's called BlopBlop, his first project in several months! Nice to see some of the originals let us know they're alive every once in a while.
Also, there's another new C64 emu out. Not sure why, the one we've got is near perfect. But if you want it, you can find it.

News: Aruze suit details
February 24, 2003 11:39 PM PST
Playmore / BS
Playmore released another announcement regarding their suit against Aruze. It seems as though the lawsuit boils down to accusations of piracy in two pachinko machines - 'Iregui' and the oft mentioned 'Crazy Racer R'. Playmore is suing for 6.2 billion yen, or roughly 51.7 million dollars. Someone tell me I'm reading this wrong? Sounds like an awful lot of money, but if the dollar amount sticks (Since they've got an ironclad copyright infringement case), it will be a great boon to Playmore and their efforts. They're really cleaning house these days!

Atlus has made the excellent decision to localize Disgaea to the US next fall!! The game will be retitled Disgaea: Hour of Darkness. If you've ever read this site, you already know the game, but regardless - it's a strategy RPG from Nippon Ichi, with excellent character design, full voice, and tons of truly engaging gameplay options. Definitely the next step for the SRPG. Check out the features, screenshots and movies here. The original japanese page can be found here. Persons on the MMCafe have been pelting Atlus with emails, asking them to allow the option of Japanese voice with subtitles, as they've done with Skygunner and Rhapsody. News: Playmore update extravoganza
February 20, 2003 7:32 PM PST
Playmore / BS
Several things have come to pass in the world of SNK. For one, a date has been set for the Matrimelee home release - 5.29 2003 for 39,800 yen. And Playmore has upped the official page for it (still on the Noise site). And also some nice art, which you see to the left there.
There's another press release regarding the trio of lawsuits, but basically just confirms what everyone knew would happen. NGP, WWV and Arcade Infinity have to stop selling/distributing pirate carts. Good for Playmore! It also mentions a bit more about the EAGO/EAKIA raids, but we'll just wait for the English pr papers, as it's really not that unexpected, this news.
But once again the release mentioned SNK NE0-GEO USA. And now they have a home. Awwww...makes me misty.
Last thing, some more scans of the KOF Overstruggle at Hard Edge, so go check that out.

Bandai has made the final decision to cease hardware manufacture for the SwanCrystal and all of its brethren as of today, with all extant orders having been shipped out to retailers. Bandai has also made no further plans for a next-gen successor to the underappreciated handheld. They will continue software support until further notice, but will shift development more to the GBA side, begining in August. A related bit of news from Lycos - Bandai's stock is up 5.3%, rising 200 yen to hit 3980 yen. They closed this quarter with a 23% rise in profits from the previous term.
It's sad to see it go - the last glimmer of Yokoi Gunpey's brilliance that we will ever see.

Teamblaze / BS
More bad news: Chess - The Emotion Wars development has been postponed. This is most likely due to the fact that Teamblaze's finished game GPfight has not been released in the two months since it's completion. Rumors still abound that GPfight will be released for MegaGP only, thereby excluding the western audience. I sincerely hope that the game is released and well recieved, if so, we may see the resumed development of Chess - TEW!!! Thanks to GP32 Notebook for the link.

Play-Asia have gotten their shipment of GBA-SP!! Being who they are, they wasted no time in gutting the thing. Check out those insides. Looks pretty clean in there. Three colors are available at the moment - Silver, Black and Purple. Of course - FF Tactics is out as well, the first title to feature GBA-SP specific resolution. Commercialism, engage!

A new group called Icon (headed by one of the GPzigi board masters) has plans to release a game called Queen of Fighters for GP32 sometime in 2003. No in-game shots yet, but the title is certainly intriguing, and the art isn't bad. English language version of the Icon/QOF website should open on the 20th of February.

Noise's arcade location test is still in process - check out the thread on the Hard Edge forums. Interesting videos, but doesn't give you that great of a feeling for the game, given the player's horrid lack of skill.

The Economy / BS

Everyone knows this by now - Reuters reported that Sega and Sammy are to become one entity, with all properties shared between. The Sammy president will head the new organization, but Sega will own a small majority of the stock. Perhaps this teaches Sega that there are better ways to beat EA than 'at their own game'. Interestingly Reuters makes it sound like Sammy isn't even a gaming company at all! We all know that to be false. I only wonder - what's to become of Smilebit, UGA et al? Will the merger carry to the west as well??
Guess this is what happens when you miss your sales mark by 90%. This sort of news becomes more and more common these days. We live in changing times.

News: Huge collection of old computers!

Kubota Junya / BS
WOW. What a collection! A man by the name of Kubota Junya has been collecting archaic computers for some time now - take a look at his collection. Truly astounding. And his old game system collection is nothing to sneeze at either (CTRL+F "video game" on the same page). An Otaku of the highest order. How long does it take to amass this sort of collection? Well, he's turning 55 next month! Feel free to join the thread in our forum and list your own collections! My modest list is the one at the top. Thanks to the mmcafe post from Porcellino for the link.
Incidentally, this fully disproves anyone who thinks Bandai is new to the gaming industry. They've made as many game consoles as Sega!

News: Atlus delays Lufia for GBA

Atlus / BS
According to a recent email press release, Atlus will be postponing the ship date for Lufia: The Ruins of Lore for GBA. The game will now ship in late April, due to the discovery of a non-fatal yet annoying bug. Glad they didn't just go ahead anyway - lack of quality control yields unfortunate results. In the mean time, check out a new movie of the game in action.

Three more pics from Bloody Cross - animated gifs this time. The Jinsu one is old (actually made slightly bigger and slowed down), followed by 'Razor' Kent to the right, and a judo character whose name I cannot decipher. She's a bit manly looking though...

Another emailed tip-off. Yesterday, in viewing the Nokia ads I was wondering who this Stevie Case character was, and why she was allowed to say such inane, backward comments in an official promo video. Turns out she's sleeping with John Romero. Well there you go. Thanks to Legioss for the info.

Thanks to an email from the mysterious Alex, I can now share four shots of the New Power Instinct location test! So what can we garner from these? You start with fifteen characters, that SS!-looking referee is there, backgrounds aren't too drab, though seem pretty domestic. lots of ROTD resemblance here! These were originally posted by Ice on the Hardedge Forum in Germany. Where he got them, I do not know. Enjoy! They're Huge!

Another video of the upcoming PS2 shooter from Cave. The intro is rather silly - basically Arika has found one of the greatest shooting fans, and test his skill with this game - "Watch. Play. Then maybe you should...DIE!" So it says, and it's no like. This fellow just can't make it through without two deaths. Even so, an impressive replay! I love the Darius-esque music too.

Four new movies of the N-Gage in action! Check them out:
Video 1 - Shows many N-Gage games in action, slow framerates and all. Graphics running the gamut from Atari 5200 to PSX level. Very, very confusing video as a result.
Video 2 - Shows Nokia's N-Gage and 6800 and 3650 gaming phones. Specs et al.
Video 3 - Interview with developers Monkeystone. I love this one actually. The girl interviewed says something completely false, only to be immediately countered by John Romero's subsequent words. Are they even aware of the contradiction?
Video 4 - Again, who the hell is this Stevie Case character? Play games on your phone in your car? Way to inform the generation guys. (also shows the Nokia 9290).

Based on Brandon's megaking link earlier, I started poking around at what else Mega Enterprises has for sale. Check this out:
"Star DNA Product - Our internet shopping mall introduces and offers a variety of products with your favorite star's DNA. The DNA merchandise keeps fans intimate to their favorite stars."
Further!
"Information about stars" -
We provide fast and accurate information about stars including star's current location, schedule, news, and etc.
You can apply for audition whenever you like, as well as you can hear other applicants
music through vocal bulletin board. Also you can join and create a fan club and community."
I am... terrified.

Site News: Bumpers Arcade, Angel Eyes

A couple of things - first and foremost, Agnes, an associate of E-JRW checked out the Bumpers Arcade, mentioned in my Adventures in SF Wonderland article. Here's what she had to say: "I was walking to the computer lab today and took the route down Pine St and when I hit Kearny I saw it! The Bumpers Arcade, just as advertised! But it was HELLA closed down, so I couldn't buy any crack."
- There you have it folks. The end of an era.
The other bit of site business - I updated the Angel Eyes review to reflect a proper translation of the prefix kanji, a long with a few notes about its usage. Oh - and I fixed the completely ridiculous errors too.
