News: Baldr Force EXE
July 30, 2004 11:49 PM PST
Alchemist / brandon
Baldr Force EXE, the latest in a long line of Last Dreamcast Games Ever, has finally got a release date. It's due out on the 29th of October for 7,455 yen. But there's more! They've decided to go limited-only with this one, in the sense that you'll be paying more than for a normal game, but you'll get an action figure with it. Check some shots of it (and of the CG) at Game Watch. If you're looking for gameplay shots, check this april report. The CERO rating isn't out for this one yet, but the original PC version was an H title. For those who've not heard of it previously, the game is basically a story driven 2D mech action blast-fest, and the latest in a rather positively reviewed series. The official site has been updated as well - downloads to come.

Interchannel / brandon
This is as good a time as any to tell you all that NEC is no longer in the game industry (aside from chips and such). They have sold of their holdings in NEC Interchannel, their publishing house, and last remnants of what was once a huge gaming group. The US branch, interviewed here in 2003, has long since dissolved. Interchannel (minus the NEC) carries on with clover, a love sim port from the PC original. The PS2 original contents will include an extra scenario, and original event CG. Incidentally - this may mean that Black Matrix OO for PSone is the final NEC game of all time. Clover releases on August 26th - 7,800 for the ltd (with audio drama CD), 6,800 for the standard.

Edited 7/21: Watanabe Productions lets out their official position on the arcade version of the game, which is: they're not involved, other than the name and opening up the code for ECOLE to work with. They don't want credit on the game, and if it's not good, don't blame them. Apparently this is in reaction to ECOLE fan and staff commentary here that Watanabe is "a fan group of kids who are hindering Ecole's work" according to one translation.
Vince: Taking the money and running seems to be a little simple for the situation. I tend to agree with the general Watanabe attitude, which is (if you read into it) that their code isn't the best to work with. Makes sense...they've never opened up game source before so it'll look like crap to the guys who've never worked on it before, and if they were never expecting to open it up, why should they adhere to a generalized commenting and structure convention? But that's just me. For more, click here.

Location test details are in for Sammy's new Atomiswave fighter. It's 3D, for one thing, and many are referring to it as 'Force Five 2', even though it's a fair bit different. Some people are saying it's similar to Justice Gakuen, some refer to Guilty Gear X. Take a look at IGGY and Fuchikoma's mmcafe bbs posts for more detailed system info.

Two interesting SNK interviews have come up in the last couple of days. One by spong, more arcade based, and another by Eurogamer, dealing with distinct differences between SNK's consumer plans in the US and the UK/europe. Both worth reading in spite of occasional errors. As an extra tidbit, KOF 98 has been added to the KOF 10th anniv. history site.

Hirameki has been slowly releasing english-language ports of Japanese dating sims in the US. They play basically the same on a PC, DVD player, PS2 or Xbox, which is the appeal of the format. There will be an artbook included in Tea Society's box. Thanks to Namakoteam for the news.

The Gradius V official DVD is up for preorder as well. Very soon they will also be stocking the Saturn USB controller originally to be packaged with the Mac port of Puyo Puyo Fever. Last but not least, the weekly deal - Gran Turismo 4 Prologue for $9.

Perhaps I'm a little late on this one - Space-Invaders is a site that documents the guerilla artwork (ala OBEY) of a frenchman who plastered space invaders on various monuments across the globe. Pretty neat idea. Check the site for images and info. He wrote a book about it as well, called L'invasion de Paris (The Invasion of Paris, obviously). Thanks to Game Girl Advance for the link.

Metroid 2 DX is the Gameboy Color upgrade that never was. Super Mario Bros. and Zelda's GB outings both got full-color versions, but Metroid got the shaft. So Metroid Evolution has applied the GB Colorizer to make for a more visually appealing experience. Rather nice results for those who, like eric-jon, find this to be one of the finer games in the series.

Brazil's Tec Toy has released yet another new piece of Sega Master System hardware! This one's called the Master System Handy. It comes with 27 games built in, and composite video out for the first time ever. Unfortunately, it's not currently known whether or not the thing will play carts. Tec Toy is the odd Brazilian Sega subsidiary that continues to release SMS titles long after the 'death' of the system, even going to the lengths of porting gamegear games to the Console. For more on Tec Toy and their odd, odd games, visit this place, and possibly here. Thanks to Slashdot Games for the link.
