A fellow by the name of k0 has reconstructed the mechs from Bangaioh using legos! He's got both models, as well as the obligatory watermelon on the Bangaioh page. Kind of hard to believe that these were plain old Legos at one point (as it were), but here's the proof! Thanks to Brady Hartel for the link.
Philippe Lorin tells me that these are indeed not ordinary legos, but rather another brand (he offers the possibility of Kubrick) popular to japan.

The popular NEC Interchannel parallel novel Interlude is going to be animated! So says Moon Phase. Winter of 2004 is the planned date, but there's no info as to whether this will be an OVA or TV animation. Horrible error in the post regarding Square-Enix's new MMORPG - I attributed it to Daewoo, stated in Techside's report as a Chinese company. Daewoo is based in Korea, so this seemed odd. Here's why - It's actually Dayu, a Taiwanese company. The reading is the same, thus the confusion. Dayu's English name is Softstar, and they are the biggest game company in Taiwan. The rest of the information holds. Thanks to Tu Cuc and others for this information.

walled city / VD
|
|
Tomorrow, Walled City (home of ever-interesting aural and visual exhibits) begins hosting River City Breaks. Lasting until August 11th, a collection of art inspired by River City Ransom provides commentary on our generation that has grown up with gaming. Or maybe it's just the artist making sprite-rip comics on canvas. Who knows. Still, itlooks interesting, to say the least, especially the "NESVISION" that supposedly "will allow multiple viewers to interact with the source material for the exhibition in a controlled environment..." I hope that doesn't just mean a TV, NES, and two controllers. I expect Los Angeles gamers (I know you're out there!) to check it out and/or show up at the reception (themed foods?! special beer!) next Saturday...

Taito / BS

|
The Gackt videogame has been planned for some time. But nobody told me that Red Entertainment was developing, and Taito publishing. That makes all the difference. Quiter dude speculated back in July that the game would likely be a Devil May Cry hack-and-slash affair. I think he was half joking. But here we are...
The game is set in Taiwan, 20XX. The action is based off of hong-kong swordplay films, with an emphasis on the cinematics. Gackt's character will be able to run up walls and perform moves as though he were on wires - a form perfected by Meteor, Butterfly and Blade. He can use swords and such (combos of over 100 are possible), as well as various forms of magic. The director made sure to note that the magic is not so damaging as to upset balance in the game, though they're going to be very bright and showy. The graphics are...gorgeously colorful. Gackt will be doing the voice acting, and of course supplied his likeness for the title. The Game Watch link has the most images, but the official page on Red's side is here. Planned for a Winter 2003, 6800 yen release. Thanks to the many folks who sent this news in. Someone must know that there are...closet fans among the staff.

Rumor: Square Enix new MMORPG
|
August 28, 2003 11:38 PM PST
|
Square Enix / BS
|
|
Squenix has got some manner of new PC MMORPG in the works, according to this Techside report. Whether or not they can be trusted, I've no idea - this is their first update in two years. But according to their info, this is a new title under development in conjunction with Taiwan's largest game company, Softstar. It's planned for release in the Chinese market, which Square-Enix views as very important (with good reason, there's a lot of PC gaming over there). The character art is odd, but the in-game visuals are astoundingly stylish. No release or price info here, but I can tell you the title: Chou Bukyuu Taisen, or Great War of Chivalry. Most curious. Thanks to KennyL's forum post for the link.

A fellow by the name of Muki sent us a couple of interesting images from the zombie simulator we linked on the 20th. Seems as though on two separate occasions, two groups of humans have simultaneously walled themselves off from zombie attack. The 'creepy double' image was taken after the sim had been running for several hours. Proof positive that one should never give up!
I have been informed by *ahem* several people that it's very common for humans to wall themselves up. Those shots were purportedly taken within one half hour. In another mail Michael Stearns says; "The only safe place from zombies is IN JAIL. So, do you choose to be turned into a zombie and live a life of partying and eating brains, or live out a [confined] existence in the arms of your burly man lover? What kind of hope is that?"
Point well taken, and no offense meant to the burly man lovers out there.

Folks seem to be speculating about an announcement on the Sega website for Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg. One of the listed features is the ability to play a number of classic games on the GBA including "NiGHTS into Dreams, Puyo Pop, Chu Chu Rocket and more!" This has already been done with PSO 1&2, but some believe that there might be something else hidden in there as well.
Another article comments that connectivity is a buzzword that's been popping up a lot. The author describes the many new gaming possibilities of "connectivity (tsunagari)" including connections between arcades and home, communications with the GBA etc. This leads into two links on the connectivity features of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles and F-Zero. These examples are meant to show the endless possibilities of connectivity. A few bits for us to speculate about ourselves.

|
D3 publisher has put up a page for the latest in their Simple 2000 series; The Shooting: Double Shienryu. As previously stated, the game contains the original 2D Shienryu, as well a new game; Sheinryu Explosion. The original Shienryu is purported to be an arcade perfect translation, for the first time. It may not have the nifty bells and whistles of the console versions, but will be bigger and badder in other ways. The new title is to be 3D, with three different types of ship. There are also six characters selectable - if you meet certain conditions, each has their own special bonus stage. I'm liking the stocky 'where's my torso?' character design already. You can preorder the game here - it's planned for a September 24 release. Thanks to Triggerzone for the link.

Good old corporations. GP32 Extreme has been forced to remove links to all freeware titles which have any relation to Tetris in name. This edict came from Glenn D. Bellamy of Greenebaum Doll & McDonald PLLC on behalf of The Tetris Company, LLC. Certainly it is their right to request this. But how much money can they be losing to a few thousand GP32 users? Feel free to tell me I'm out of line here.
OK, so I am out of line. It's interesting regardless. If we still had a forum, we could discuss it there.

Last week Shep began pestering me about a ffta review. He wanted to write one, that is. I said ok - been out for a while though. No sir, he was talking about the american release on 8/9! Not one day later he discovered that the true release date was 9/8. Feeling sheepish, he wrote a review anyway, in true IGN style. All in all, we wind up with a good tongue-in-cheek read, so who's complaining?

Just a lil plug. I bought all three issues of 1up Zine at the classic gaming expo last weekend, and was really quite impressed. KID's got some neat new stuff going on. First of all, announced at the latest Comiket: Memories Off Mix. There's also a puzzle mode, and a character driven mahjong game. It's planned for a 6800 yen PS2 release within the year. Interestingly, the genre they list is "Memories Off variety". Not too many other games in that field, eh?
Another bit from KID, the Natsu Yume site has been renewed. The game is coming out in just two weeks - check out that art design (example left). There's an opening movie for you to download if your interest has been piqued. And hey look! You can purchase it here! Shocked, aren't you?

Eternity / BS
|
|
A new Korean firm by the name of Eternity has just put up a page for their planned GP32 SRPG: Goddess Saga. The player-characters are (nearly?) exclusively female, and a high level of interaction is planned. Battles are strategic on a hex-grid pattern, with physical and magic attacks aplenty. In fact there will be an interesting combo system which may require multiple input on the player side. That last bit is unconfirmed. Battles will accommodate a rather large number of characters on both sides. The level-up system is based around job and class changing (seen here). The game uses true transparencies, and has an obviously high quality level graphically. The full gallery can be found here. The game is planned for a late 2003 release, so we've not long to wait! On a side note, there's also a download section on the main site. Nothing there yet, but it looks like soundtrack excerpts will soon be available here, as well as movies. Illustration and wallpaper sections appear to be planned as well. Thanks to GPzigi for the link, GP32 Notebook for the translation into Japanese.

The official page for Shikigami no Shiro II GC has been opened. Lots of new info available as well. The Gamecube version will include all 7 characters from the arcade, and have a few playable modes. Arcade will take you through the full story mode, practice mode is basically score/stage attack. Unlockables include 'story recollect' mode, where you can hear/view the dialogue from the story, which should be worth something given the fact that they've hired some professional voice actors to do the voice. There will also be a gallery mode for the illustrations, et al. The game will feature TATE (vertical) mode, as the last one did - and this time in normal mode there will be an illustration of your character on the sidebars. Vibration and progressive scan are also to be available. The game is planned for an October 24th release at 6800 yen.

Another new system on the horizon - but this is one you might actually be able to get excited about. The Xgamestation is a system for developers; it sports a low-end processor (near the C64/Atari 800 level), a few controller and eprom ports - that's about it. But it's positioning itself as the perfect device for classic amateur game home dev, with detailed programming guides and SDK. The system allows easy access to the single main board for custom modding, expansion or what-have-you. Optional accessories include backlit LCD display, Vector display, Atari 2600 and Xbox controller ports, with more to come. We'll hear a lot more from these guys in the coming weeks. "It's a game that uses simple interface to manipulate the main character to run a
cake shop. Unlike other 'shop running sims' we got rid of all the rigid rules system and
simplified the game system to make it fun."
What we can take from these words - this will be more action-oriented than anything. The sim elements will be downplayed, in favor of the minigame-esque appeal. Could be interesting.

Ocio Joven has put up four Samurai Spirits Zero taken by their agent in Japan at last weekend's beta test. There are four videos in total, each 15 seconds in length, and rather small in size (1.4 meg average). Check out the original post right here. The links are dead though, so I've uploaded them here; Character Selection - Yoshitora VS Kusageredo - Light Ukyo vs Yoshitora. The fourth video is still at large - if you've got it, send it over. Thanks to RainMakeR for sending the third video. I had originally credited Ocio Joven's work to someone else, but the error has been corrected.

Wildcat Software / BS
|
|
The Korean doujin group XD Marine Team has changed their name to Wildcat Software, and updated their page with some new info (found in their Free Board - where you'll see some oddly familiar references). The game will have 12 main characters, at least 1 hidden character and a final boss (unplayable?). Very detailed animation and a sci-fi theme (it's based on a manga written by my contact).
Mortak Kombat Zero is still being produced as well, not put on hiatus as I'd previously reported. The sprites have been redone, with a much more jaggy polygon look (while still being in 2D).
If they can get additional programmers, they plan to port the games to GP32 - so keep your fingers crossed. New sprite images for Xtreme Dual will be released very soon. More info as it comes.

Here's an interesting headbanging rhythm game from Swedish traum4tized. It's a bit buggy, but fun for a few go-throughs. As added clicking incentive the headbanger is a very well designed anime-esque goth girl. Unfortunately the highest scores reported are due to the game getting stuck in frenzy mode. Thanks to .Juan// for the news.

News: Team Athena (Bug Eyed Monster)

|
Team Athena / BS
|
|
|
Team Athena was the group within Treebuds (Article Seezak) that programmed Story of Bug Eyed Monster, the forthcoming visual novel for GP32. That game is still planned for an end-of-month release, but now Team Athena has gone off on it's own. In fact, the game is no longer even being released in conjunction with Treebuds.
Now that they've got their own site, they've released some images from Story of BEM - including some screens of the minigames. Looks as though there's a memory tile game, as well as an RPG-ish portion. They've also announced a new game; The Sentinel. No word on whether this is GP32 or PC software just yet. More on Team Athena and their projects, assuming they can be contacted. Thanks to GP32 Notebook for the news and images.

Here's an odd game that comes from the same competition as the Dismount games we mentioned yesterday. Frontal Assault is a sort of action/puzzle game in which you must...slap these breasts in certain patterns before move icons fall past the screen. Rather disturbingly addictive. Thanks to A_Lee_N for the news.
As always with this sort of thing, I'm not sure whether to be offended or simply to laugh. What would Jane say?

It's time for Truck Dismount, the sequel to the popular Finnish amateur game Stair Dismount. Make a truck crash with remarkable physics, gaining points for critical damage. Quite addictive and quite free. Well worth your time.
Thanks to A_Lee_N for pointing out that these games are not flash, but hard coded games. My mind was still on Mikomiko nurse.

Play Asia has got their SvC Chaos preorders up! Only $339 and that bad boy of a home cart can be yours. The game is still planned for an October 9th release in Japan.
On other odd news, there's an interesting Pokemon wand - official product from Nintendo. You kind of...shake the thing in the air, and different Ruby or Sapphire related pokemon, out of 200, are resultant from the movement of the LEDs. There's a quiz game to play, basically Pokemon identification, as well as a 'communication mode', in which you can have conversations with Pikachu. Check out more images at the Pokemotion website.

This is the final chapter in our strange Famicom tribute-style feature. Chris Kohler has played through the best (worst?) of the Famicom pirate fighters, rated them with a semi-nonsensical scoring system, all from the comfort of an emulator. A half-assed approach to half-assed games, with pleasing results. BREAK A SPINE R....

Not too long ago this would have been another doujin update. But Type-Moon has moved from the amateur sector into the professional, and now they've announced a game to prove it! Fate: Stay Night is a visual novel for PC, planned for release within 2003, price undetermined. Very nice art and CG to look at for the time being. Should be pretty interesting, considering how much they have to prove. They are one of the first, if not the first company to make the crossover in this way. Thanks to Zepy (Canned Dogs) for the link.

In other news, the snapshot contest has received over 500 shots - there are now six pages of the best and brightest up there.

FaMe Soft / BS

I got a bit more info regarding FaMe Soft's upcoming GP32 RPG project! The previously mentioned title 2 ways is actually a working title. 'Ways' may be a poor translation, says programmer Don Miguel - 'paths' or 'roads' may be more accurate. And the '2' in the title is intended to be a runic symbol. But as for actual details; it's an original RPG aimed towards adults. There will be adult themes and subject matter, though he's not sure about how Gamepark will censor it. The graphics will be more realistic, and not so anime based. More info as it comes!
