E3: Hirameki International

This is pretty cool. Remember Phantom of Inferno, that DVD-only game that was released in 2001 by Comunet? It's back. Hirameki International has picked up the title for distribution. But that's not all. They've grabbed up nearly every Frontwing and K-industries visual novel from the last 5 years or so, in addition to some other choice titles. These are by and large translated ports of the censored DVD versions Japanese hentai galget games. DVD PC games have been around in Japan for some time, but this is the first large-scale English language release. On top of this, the games are now playable on any DVD player - that means stand-alone, PS2, PC, Xbox, what have you. And to my pleasant surprise, the dialogue is still in the original Japanese language with English subs (Phantom being the exception). Great stuff!!!

Here are the titles:

From Nitroplus:
Phantom of Inferno - available now

From K-Industry - available Q4 2003:
Koiyoubi -Day of Love-
The Sixteenth Night Love Song
The Bride of Ergeners
Lying on Yoshia Heights...
Koimusubi -Lover's Knot-
Amusement Park
Snow Talk

From Frontwing - available Q4 2003:
Seperate Blue
Azrael
Sweet Legacy
Five O One
Canary
Hooligan
Tea Society of a Witch

From Princess Soft:
Hourglass of Summer - Q4 2003

From Jaleco:
Idol Fighters Su-chi-pai - June, 2003

From NEP21:
Soar High! Isami vol. 1 - June 2003

This is a very cool thing, and each game will only cost $29.99. And some of these titles also come with bonuses - Suchi Pai for instance (or Su-Chi-Pai, as they call it) comes with intros from Saturn and PSX renditions of the games. Unfortunately the guy I spoke to about the titles was not too up on his product. He had never heard of Frontwing, for instance. Once I can get ahold of a better rep for the product, I'll see if I can't get some reviewable copy and inform you further about the quality of the titles. The only game displayed today was the 2-year-old Phantom of Inferno, an awful game by all accounts (including mine). But I'm very interested to see how these do. Hirameki does plan to get these in conventional stores, as well as selling them online. Unless I'm mistaken, this is the first wide release of galget games in the US. And it’s certainly a fair price.

More on this as I try to find someone on the show floor who knows what they're talking about.
