PlayGround

As much fun as it has been to use the PlayGround for planning and requests, I've set up the main page discussion just for that purpose.

A Question of Philosophy

The factual stuff is pretty self-explanatory. On the theory end, however, things are a little murkier: is this wiki supposed to be a repository of the conclusions we reach in the forum, or would this be more an extension of the fora, such that we might debate the merits of various notions on the pages that put forth those notions?

Basically, I think I'm saying I'd like for Discussion, or Talk: pages to be added in the near future. Or should we have a dedicated wiki-wide Discussion page? Or should we just continue using the Playground as a sort of amorphous discussion board? 1)

  • A discussion page would be nice for discussing controversies or tossing around ideas. Perhaps we could settle on a somewhat standardized format for the page titles as well to keep things streamlined and intuitive. For example, if the discussion is about, oh, completion-compulsiveness, the title of the page would clearly outline which page of the site is being discussed. Or perhaps a new forum group could be added to the forums instead of/in addition to having a discussion page in the wiki (and just keep the playground for goofing off and wiki specific examples)? Conversations are much, much easier to be had there, after all.
  • I personally think the wiki format is better for presenting the conclusions reached in the forums rather than being another “thread” of the forums, so to say. The theory side of the wiki is indeed murky water, but most of us are gentlemen (or ladies) here, and as long as we respect each others contributions and weave our own thoughts into what has already been presented rather than completely disregard alternate views, it should go pretty smoothly.
  • One issue it might be worthwhile to discuss is how strictly the traditional wiki dogma of neutrality should be followed. Obviously the factual side of the site isn't touched by this, and given the nature of the medium radical views tend to be ironed out a bit, but surely we should be able to offer opinions…even if we have to provide arguments for both sides. For example, I noticed aderack wrote in the Mario page that the structure of Mario 64 has so far proven a development cul-de-sac. I feel we should definately be able to voice opinions like this, even though they may be controversial. If someone strongly disagrees then they can weave their view into the thread while keeping aderack's opinion intact. If we have to attempt to uphold a guise of neutrality, the wiki will get real boring real quick as there are already countless other places one can go to get obscure facts.

This is a test!

Oh snap! The president has been kidnapped by ninjas! Are you a bad enough dude to rescue the president?

And this is another test

You don't say?

But I do say!

Well then, I'll jackoff anyways.

You would, wouldn't you?

But the proper terminology is “have a good wank regardless.”

the proper terminology

…is “have a good breakdance regardless.”

Incidentally

Do we have a page for suggestions? For, say, pooling thoughts and plans that might extend beyond one user's capability to implement? If we DID have such a page, I'd use it to recommend some way for users to change their randomly generated password. 2)

A bit slow today, don't you think?

  • I like this format.
  • Wiki syntax is neat.
  • Rather intuitive.

//Can you make headers italic??//

===I don't think you can!===

well isn't that a pile of poo

User Names as pages

Is it possible for our user names to become actual wiki pages as well? They'd be great for out-loud thoughts, or contact details.

I don't see why you couldn't create a page for your username (and possibly a user directory page if such a thing is not automatically generated). — Legato B 2005/09/28 04:20

Brandon says we're trying to implement some of this stuff, people (Vince, Lawrence) are looking into it.

Image Linking

Q: Is there a way to make a local image link? See the end of verisimilitude, where it seems it would make more sense to upload that image locally, but I'm not sure of the code for that.
A: When editing a page you can click the image button, and choose or upload an image.
Followup: I wasn't clear enough - I know how to upload an image, but I'd like to know how to make a text link TO that local, already uploaded image, instead of displaying it with as with the curly brackets (see the Doctor Who text in the example above).

1) This is mostly to record existing conclusions and ideas that have been previously fleshed out to some degree. Feel free to note where there's a conflict or alternative idea available. Also! Link originating IC articles or blog posts where appropriate, to keep the cross-references going and to provide further context for where this stuff is coming from and how it might add up.
2) Yeah, that's a good idea. And I'd also like a path bar at the top, instead of this weird “trace” thing.
